How could I pass up a bunch of my favorite comedy and Broadway veterans singing Burt Bacharach songs? Lea Delaria hosted her People Lea Like: Sing Burt Bacharach event featuring Alan Cumming, Sandra Bernhard, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Judy Gold, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Mary Testa and Cady Huffman. In the relatively unscripted, unrehearsed event, each took to the stage at Highline Ballroom to pay tribute to the songwriting legend and to raise money for cancer.
Lea Deleria started the night off with “There’s Always Something There To Remind Me,” and the hits kept coming. “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” by Daphne Rubin-Vega, “A House Is Not A Home,” by Mary Testa, “Alfie,” by Alan Cumming. But my two favorite performances were a hilarious song/Jewish banter between Lea Deleria and Judy Gold on “”Do You Know The Way To San Jose,” and “I Say A Little Prayer” by East Coast newcomer and bluesy belter Kim Kuzma. This lady can sing!
And to top off the night, my friend Ted and I are sitting at a table in the front of the room with Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, who play Mitchell and Cameron, respectively, on ABC’s hit show, Modern Family. Cool to see Stonestreet come out and support his cast member, and help raise money for Lea’s show. Together, they auctioned off a t-shirt for $600. Mark that down as another great New York moment.
