Alan Cumming had me with his opening number, a medley of “Wig in a Box” and “Wicked Little Town” from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.  Tonight I went to a Empire State Pride Agenda fundraiser at the Highline Ballroom in Chelsea featuring Alan’s stage show, I Bought a Blue Car Today.

He covered a lot of great songs from musicals I’ve never seen like Falsettos and Chess.  But my favorite song was a mash-up of Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again” and Mika’s “My Interpretation.”  I just saw Mika last week and I was a little bummed he didn’t sing that song, as it’s one of my faves.  Funny how the Universe just lobs one right back at you from time to time.

What I really enjoyed were the stories Alan tells of his life and career.  He’s hysterical.  Cyndi Lauper, Ann Miller, Mika, Lauren Bacall and the late, great Walter Cronkite and Natasha Richardson were all referenced, among others.  Good show!  Buy his album!
