Back in 2003, native New Yorker Kelis brought all the boys to the yard with her “Milkshake.” Now she’s back with a new studio album and potentially one of the hottest dance tracks of the summer, “Acapella,” produced by the master himself, David Guetta. The Internet has spawned so many remixes already. The vocals on “Acapella” are gorgeous, and are wrought with honest emotion as its about her six-month-old son, Knight. “Before you, my whole life was acapella. Now a symphony’s the only song to sing.” Sweet.
Tonight she performed an intimate gig (my favorite) to a packed Santos Party House in SoHo. As it turns out, this was Kelis’ first live set of new material and by the sound of her hew new songs it appears motherhood is boding well for her. She looks fantastic, beautifully voluptuous and almost regal. Kelis is all grown up, y’all. I am really excited to get my hands on her new album, and I think her driving beats will be with us all summer. Highlights included “22nd Century,” “Milkshake” mashed up with Madonna’s “Holiday,” and her closer, “Acapella.” Na na. Na na.
