One thing I love about New York and small music venues like Mercury Lounge is that you have a good chance of sharing a drink at the bar with the band without even knowing it. That’s pretty much what happened to me and my cackle sisters, Maz and Martha. The three of us went to check out up-and-coming “chillwave” duo MS MR. The New York band featured a Ms. (Lizzy) and a Mr. (Max) and two more dudes on keys and drums. MS MR MR MR clearly wouldn’t fly unless they also performed “Broken Wings.” Regardless, her blue hair and Cruela deVil coat and his handsome Jake Shears mug caught my eye at the bar and was surprised to see them take the stage. Best known for their first single “Hurricane,” the pair chill-axed their way through their debut EP Candy Bar Creep Show. I liked them a lot, particularly their aforementioned single and “Ash Tree Lane.” Her voice is a little spooky, gravelly, somewhere between Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes and Florence Welch, but very much her own sound too. Regardless who she sounds like, I still think she looked like Dana Plato. No one gets me.
