Thursday night was a last minute decision. Inspired by Chairlift playing on Spotify at work, I looked into their tour schedule and saw that they were opening for The xx that night at Hammerstein. Two bands on my list to see. It was a make-up concert due to Hurricane Sandy, so it was pretty easy to snatch up a couple floor tickets. Unfortunately, Chairlift did not perform. Toronto-based Austra played the make-up date. But it was ok because The xx swept me away. The haunting, husky voice of Oliver Sim paired with the lush, silky voice of Romy Madley-Croft was simply magical. He conjured memories of Steve Kilbey, lead singer of The Church. Remember them? She’s just her own beautifully understated self. I want to believe she understands and relishes the perks of being a wallflower.
These Brits had me right away with their opener “Angels” with Madley-Croft cooing “being as in love with you as I am” over and over again. I want that. Other highlights featured third band mate Jamie Smith on steel drum for “Reunion” and my favorite song off their latest album Coexist, “Swept Away.” After the show, the Coachella line-up was announced. They’re playing. Meet you in the Gobi tent at 4:15. Right side, half way back from stage. xx marks the spot.
