Catching Jay Brannan‘s very last show of 2013 was special in itself, but seeing him in a brand new venue made it even more so.  A subterranean music-and-arts oasis hidden beneath the streets of NoHo, SubCulture is a stellar cellar place to catch an intimate set like Jay’s.

Donning a reindeer suit, Jay celebrated the season hoof-in-cheek with ‘Dear Santa’ before delving into his songbook of poignant but often sad and lonely folk songs. I totally get him. ‘Beautifully,’ ‘Can’t Have It All’ and ‘Half-Boyfriend’ were among my favorites.

I also love Jay’s penchant for picking just the right songs to cover. I’ve heard him cover Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ and the Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ but tonight it seemed like he picked a song just for me — called ‘Me,’ off of Paula Cole’s 1996 album This Fire. Thanks, Jay for the reminder: it’s me who makes the monsters.
