Australian alt rock band The Preatures was a highlight of my Coachella experience this year. They got the whole weekend started on Day 1 as ‘Is This How You Feel?’ swept through the polo grounds on my arrival and on Day 3 opened Classixx’s set to perform the same song remixed. The five-piece band features the seductive vocals of Isabella Manfredi (also on keyboards), Gideon Bensen (guitar/vocals), Jack Moffitt (guitar), Thomas Champion (bass) paying homage to INXS in a vintage t-shirt and Luke Davison (drums).
Manfredi is a vocal chameleon. Opening with ‘Manic Baby,’ she sounded like Joan Jett. On ‘Threat’ she morphed into Chrissie Hynde. On ‘Whatever You Want’ I heard Terri Nunn of Berlin and on ‘Two Tone’ she channeled the aching soul of Bonnie Raitt. It just depends on the tempo and intensity of each song. But man, I love this girl.
My favorite song by The Preatures is also their latest single, ‘Better Than It Ever Could Be.’ The song title also describes my summary of this show in the Bowery Ballroom on a rainy Monday night in New York.
