She’s come a long way since seeing Welsh pop star Marina & The Diamonds make her U.S. debut at the Bell House in Brooklyn. Three albums and five years later, she’s still one of my favorite artists out there. After her commercially successful Electra Heart album three years ago, she’s back with Froot, her new album which has since become her highest charting U.S. endeavor.
She’s in New York for the Governor’s Ball and managed to squeeze in a late show at Webster Hall (11:20 p.m. curtain call). A stunner always, Marina appeared in an pink and black striped skin-tight unitard singing ‘Bubblegum Bitch.’ She rocked it all night long with a shimmering chrome ‘Froot‘ tiara. It was sorta perfect.
While I’ve seen Marina many times now, I was really excited to hear her new music and she did not disappoint. ‘Forget,’ ‘Better Than That,’ her title track and ‘Happy’ made me happy indeed. ‘I’m a Ruin’ and ‘Blue’ were her best of the night. Other highlights included oldies but goodies ‘I Am Not a Robot,’ ‘Mowgli’s Road,’ ‘Radioactive’ and her closer, ‘How To Be a Heartbreaker.’ Having endured her many transformations, I’m happy to see her back to basics: brunette locks, killer body and unmistakable vocals. You really can’t do better than that.
